Important Drawing of Co. Sligo
Elcock (Chas.) Artist
An original sepia
Water-colour entitled “Cromlech at
Carrowmore, Co. Sligo”, signed by Charles
Elcock and dated 29 July 1882. On verso
are a description, plan and sketch of “The
Kissing Stone, the largest Cromleach at
Carrowmore near Sligo.”
An attractive and important study of one of
Sligo’s main prehistoric monuments. Elcock
contributed “Short Notes on Carrowmore”
to the Proceedings of the Belfast Naturalists’
Field Club in 1883-4; his scholarship and
artistic skill are acknowledged by W.G.
Wood-Martin in his major study of the
Carrowmore megalithic cemetery in the
Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries
of Ireland (vol. 17, 1885-6, pp 539-594). As a
watercolour, w.a.f. (1)

Irish Language Enthusiast &
Distinguished Photographer
O’Muircheartaigh (Tomas)
An interesting
manuscript occasional diary Feb. 1935- Dec.
1941, mostly in Irish, but a few paragraphs
in English, giving his views on plays he saw,
people he met, paintings he viewed and
in many cases both. There are also some
lists of paintings from Victor Waddington &
other Galleries, with prices & comments. He
is not impressed by Jack Yeats (La Samhna
1940), and asks if the painter is mocking the
public (‘
an ag magadh Gen bpobal etc an
t-ealadhnach?’)
and was also disappointed
by Nano Reid (2.12.39), but on 3.6.35 he
records spending £21 on a painting by Paul
Henry. ‘
Is docha na fuil aoin chiall agam’ (I
suppose I have no sense) - his heirs might not
agree.
As a m/ss, w.a.f.
* An interesting document in a small 8vo
leather backed notebook, c. 80pp.
Tomas O’Muircheartaigh was a civil
servant, active in various Irish language
bodies. He was a close friend of many artist
of his period, and a very distinguished
