Letter to Lissadell fromThe Boer War, 1900 Co. Sligo: A fine letter
in stamped envelope addressed to Mrs. Dudley Fletcher, Lissadell
Parsonage, nr. Sligo. Written from Wakers Hook Ladysmith, 18 July
1900, 3 lg. pages. The writer (signing as ‘’Rupert’’) sends Mrs. Fletcher
birthday greetings. he reports that he is busy building ‘’sangars’’ (Stone
walls or shelter trenches) and small roads. He has been adopted by a
large stray dog that ‘’probably belonged to a rebel farmer.’’ He says the
camps are healthy when sited on ground not previously used by troops,
which ‘’nurses enteric’’. he briefly mentions ‘’the Chinese business’’ (the
Boxer Rebellion) and regrets he will not be sent to serve there. As a m/ss,
