Field Marshal, 1st Earl of Ypres, Lord
Lieut. Of Ireland 1918 - 21.
French (Sir John)
A small collection
including:
- The original programme for his funeral at
Westminster Abbey, May 1925;
- His card with his signature, July 1919;
- A slip cut from a letter of appointment
with his signature as Lord Lieut.;
- An envelope addressed in French’s hand to
Samuel Power Esq. at the Irish Office, with
French’s attractive seal to rear;
- A short signed note in French’s almost
illegible hand, on his Roscommon
notepaper, enclosing ‘this very
unsatisfactory reply’ (not present);
- A signed note on French’s Roscommon
notepaper, to Power, thanking him for
a message, Sept. 1921 (possibly on his
resignation); with related envelope;
- An A.L.s. from French to Power, on
notepaper of Hotel de Crillon, Paris, Feb. ‘22,
has been abroad all winter, wants to go to
Ireland ‘but whether that is possible seems
doubtful’, etc., with related envelope.
A good collection. Lord French was born
in England of a family with Roscommon
roots. He took the title of ‘Earl of Ypres’ but
his record as British commander in France
was not universally approved, and he was
eventually replaced before going to Dublin.
As a collection. (1)
