An Irishman Dies in a French Prison, 1808 File of Documents in

French and English attesting that John Hearne Dillon, native of Co.

Roscommon, an Irish Gentleman, hostage and prisoner for debt in the

prison at Verdun, had died there on 9 June 1808. The documents in

French are translated by Hans Christian Schott and attested by Charles

Fower, Mayor of London, and William Armistead, notary public. An

unusual record of an Irishman imprisoned in France in the time of
