Pastel on paper, 62cms x 51cms (24 ½” x 20”). (1) This head and shoulders portrait of a young woman has a modern feel, marking it out as more Edwardian than late Victorian. The attribution to William Orpen is tentative, although his portraits of women often have this ‘modern’ feeling, where the person depicted is not just a ‘type’ but a real human being. That same sense of confidence as is shown by the sitter in this work; she is depicted with her head turning towards the viewer, a device that invests the work with a sense of animation, as if she is present. A dark area around the sitter’s face highlights her pale skin and slightly flushed cheeks. Her expression is enquiring, rather than engaging. With her red hair tied back, and wearing a light marabou shawl, this woman radiates a sense of independence, and an awareness of fashion. Popular in Edwardian times, the marabou shawl was a light wrap, worn around the shoulders, and tied with a fluffy tassel on the front. It was made from soft marabou feathers, from the underside of a turkey, or soft wool. The background in this portrait is an abstract pattern of delicate pastel marks.
