99 Fonsie Mealy’s Est. 1934 892. 19th Century Irish Naive School An oval Portrait of a “Young Girl member of the Dillon Family of Clonbrock,”O.O.C., depicting a young girl in typical landscape, with toys in hand wearing a floral dress (restored by Phillipa Garner) approx. 76cms x 64cms (30” x 25”) in gilt frame. (1) Provenance: Clonbrock House, Galway, by direct family descent. €300 - €400 893. Circle of John Singer Sargent, (1856-1925) “Sketch Portrait of a Woman with a Violin,”O.O.C., 61cms x 41cms (24” x 16”). (1) Wearing a white satin dress and holding a violin on her lap, a woman is seated on a low seat, set against a dark background. There is little attempt to depict the sitter’s face, which is turned to one side. Attention is focused instead on the violin, which the woman holds with both hands. The colour palette is limited, with ivory, burnt umber and white, enlivened with dashes of dark red. This is a portrait sketch by a skilled and confident painter, a wonderful example of academic portraiture at its best. While, on the basis of its quality and Irish provenance, an attribution to John Lavery is feasible, there are shades of Sorolla or John Singer Sargent in the bravura brushwork and skilled use of colour. Early 18th Century Irish School “Portrait of Susannah Magan,”O.O.C, head and shoulder portrait of a lady with a pearl headdress, blue shawl and white blouse, approx. 75cms x 64cms (30” x 25”), unframed (relined) (1) The daughter of an Irish chieftain, Morgan Magan of Togherstown, Co. Westmeath, Susannah married Sir Arthur Shean, 2nd Baronet of Kilmore as his second wife. Through their daughter, she is an ancestor of the Shean- Carter family and of the Lords Claremorris. A wealthy widow, she married Robert Dillon of Clonbrook in 1725. In 1976 the painting sold for € 60 at the Clonbrock Auction and was brought back in 1987.
