Dublin Boys’ Brigade A Scrapbook, 1890s, including news cuttings, accounts, leaflets, concert programmes, invitations, a few ALS, a manuscript address in envelop, laid in or laid down in a small 4to scrapbook, covers missing, well worn, but a useful historical source, complied by W. Connor, who as Hon. Batt. Sec., and active in the organization. (1) The Boys’ Brigade was a Protestant scouting group organized on military lines. The chairman of the Dublin Battalion was Lord Plunket. (Archbishop of Dubin). €200 - €300 816. Captain O’Reilly’s ‘IrishWar News’ An original copy of the First Issue of IrishWar News , Vol. 1 No. 1, Dublin, Tuesday April 25, 1916 (second day of the Easter Rising), 4 pp small quarto, printed within the area of central Dublin controlled by the Volunteers. Fold marks, short tear, a little frayed, no loss, generally a good copy of this very fragile item. (1) *From the collection of Capt. Michael William O’Reilly, aide-de-camp to Comdt. Joseph Plunkett, later head of the New Ireland Assurance Co. With a printed photograph of O’Reilly, and with the covers of an Easter Week Commemoration Concert Programme, 1939, marked up to indicate how ‘inside & outside of War News’ was to be printed (presumably in another commemoration Programme). Provenance: Given by Captain Michael William O’Reilly, before his death, to a colleague in New Ireland Assurance. Following his colleague’s passing and the subsequently closure of New Ireland Assurance, the associated items were preserved by the present vendor. €1000 - €1500 817 – See page 106 818. 1916: Two printed and Signed “Permanent Passes - Permission granted to Mrs. Marian May, Kingstown 3rd & 4th May,” Signed by Major A.P.M. framed. (Irish Times) 1917 Issue, illus. & adverts, fold. map ptd. wrappers; Saorstat Eireann - Constitution of the Free State of Ireland [English Translation], D. 1922, 34pps., ptd. wrappers. (2) €150 - €200 820. “A Letter from Frongoch in 1916” O’Reilly (Capt. Michael William) A good ALS from Frongoch detention center in Wales, 18 Sep. 1916, one page, possibly smuggled out (no censor’s marks), to ‘ Dear Jim’ [James Ryan], thanking him for his letter, congratulating him on ‘ your brilliant pass in your “final” ’, mentioning the routine in prison, ‘ We indulge in a sober game of Bridge or Chess. At present we have gone handball mad and play it every hour of the day. I expect our next craze will be boxing as a set of gloves have just been sent to us ..’ Fold marks, minor tears, no loss. (1) *Michael O’Reilly served in the GPO in 1916 as Aide-de-Camp to Joseph Plunkett. Later he was head of the New Ireland Assurance Co. for many years. Dr. James Ryan, medical officer to the Volunteers in the GPO, was released from Frongoch in time to sit his medical ‘finals’.
