Boy Scouts 1919 to Sept. 1924 A thick File , thus titled by Lord Powerscourt, including a fine photograph showing Powerscourt with the Scouts founder Lord Baden-Powell and his (Baden-Powell’s) son, August 1928, with another photo of a Scouts group, and a large collection (100 or more) of unsorted correspondence relating to the Irish Boy Scouts, including registrations, appointments, resolutions, enquiries, reports, a table plan for Lord Meath’s Irish Scout Dinner, August 3rd 1920, 2 pp, with printed menu; an ALS to Powerscourt from Baden-Powell, 14 November 1919, congratulating him on ‘the progress which is evidently going on now in Ireland among the Scouts under your direction .. If we can once get a fair proportion of the boys under good influences I hope that really good results may come of it.’; cyclostyled report of a meeting, October 1920, to consider the best means of promoting the Boy Scout Movement in Ireland; a TLS from Lord Meath headed ‘Confidential’, concerning ‘future relations between Southern Ireland and Imperial Scouting Head Quarters’, etc; a four page ms. document in Powerscourt’s hand dated 1912, outlining social and other differences affecting Scouting in Ireland as compared to Britain, including a reference to the ‘slovenly’ habits of the people, as regards clothing, gait and promptness; and several documents from Powerscourt and others concerning future governance of the Scouting movement in the Irish Free State, relations with Northern Ireland, problems in raising funds, etc. An interesting collection, which would benefit by careful sorting and organisation, as an archive.
