(1) With its delicate colouring and naturalistic detail, this Madonna and Child combines elements of both Netherlandish painting and Italian Renaissance art. The Madonna’s red dress is partly covered by a warm lined green cloak, fastened at the neck. Behind the throne are scenes of countryside and buildings, with the figure of John the Baptist in a mountainous landscape. During the Renaissance in Italy, many paintings depicting the Madonna and Child were produced, in cities such as Venice, Perugia, Siena and Florence. The tradition of such images goes back to the early Renaissance, and even earlier, to the Byzantine era, when the paintings were done in tempera and backgrounds were of gold leaf. By 1500, the Northern European technique of painting in oils, and an increasing confidence in the depiction of realistic landscape, had taken hold in Italy. The sense of serenity and skill in combining naturalistic detail with decorative elements, as seen in this painting, can be found in the work of artists such as Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Giovanni Bellini and Bernardino Pinturicchio. This Madonna and Child is perhaps a copy of a work by one of these artists, most likely Pinturicchio—although the style of having the infant Christ looking away is a characteristic also of the work of Perugino.
