Literature: Recorded in Strickland’s “Dictionary..,” 1913. Madame La Touche is believed to be Cecilia La Touche (1769-1848) who married David La Touche, Marbay. She was the daughter of Joseph Leeson, 1st Earl of Milltown, Russborough, Co. Wicklow. Provenance: Capt. C. Colthurst Vesey, Lucan House; later with Pawsey & Payne, Bury St., St. James, London.
In the Collection of James Thursby Pelham, This pastel previously belonged to James Thursby-Pelham (1869-1947), who formed his collection at the height of the ‘Duveen’ fashion for portraits of aristocratic subjects before and after the First WorldWar. Thursby-Pelham was an acknowledged collector, and his house at 55 Cadogan Gardens, London was filled with treasures. His collection included other important Hugh Douglas Hamilton portraits, including the small full length of Arthur Hill, 2nd Marquess of Downshire (1753-1801), Lot 87, Christies, Old Master Drawings andWatercolours, 5 July 2017. €1500 - €2000
