Eaton (1764-1811) is known as America’s Lawrence of Arabia. Eaton
was a soldier and diplomat based in North Africa at the turn of the

by those states. In an effort to depose the hostile Dey of Tripoli Eaton led
a small band of American soldiers and mercenaries across 600 miles of
Libyan Desert and captured the important city of Derna near Tripoli. It
was the first foreign United States Military Victory. During World War
II both the Allies and Germans studied Eatons campaign while they
criss-crossed the same territory during the North African campaign.
