Eaton (1764-1811) is known as America’s Lawrence of Arabia. Eaton

was a soldier and diplomat based in North Africa at the turn of the

eighteenth century, at a time when American shipping was preyed upon

by those states. In an effort to depose the hostile Dey of Tripoli Eaton led

a small band of American soldiers and mercenaries across 600 miles of

Libyan Desert and captured the important city of Derna near Tripoli. It

was the first foreign United States Military Victory. During World War

II both the Allies and Germans studied Eatons campaign while they

criss-crossed the same territory during the North African campaign.
