Records of The Tower of London Bayley (J. Whitcomb) The History

and Antiquities of the Tower of London, with Memoirs of Royal and

Distinguished Persons, 2 vols. 4to London 1825, First Edn. plates in Vol.

1 (some repairs). Also Arthur Henry Cook, Prisoners of the Tower, one

of 45 copies of a MS history compiled by a Chief Yeoman Warder prior

to his retirement in 1954. Comprises biographical sketches of prisoners

from 1101 (Bishop Flambard) to 1941 (Rudolf Hess), in chronological

order. (There are very few entries after 1820). Also lists of executions,

escapes and deaths from natural causes, and an alphabetical index of

all prisoners. All uniform cloth. Many of the most illustrious names

in British and Irish history feature. The Irish entries include the 8th,

9th, 10th and 11th Earls of Kildare (1494 - 1582), Arthur and Roger

O’Connor (1798), and Sir Roger Casement (1916), besides several other

well known national figures and a few rogues. These volumes were

acquired by Dennis H.N. Sellers in 1991-2 to be used in his proposed

biographical dictionary of all prisoners in the Tower. As a coll., w.a.f. (1)
