He was brought by his owner to Britain when his parents died, and eventually under the patronage of John Montague, 2nd Duke of Montague, who educated him. Sancho eventually left and started up his own business, and also started to write and publish essays and books. He became involved in the nascent British abolitionist movement, which sought to outlaw both the slave trade and the institution itself and he became one of its most devoted supporters.
