Carlow: [Poteen Making 1808-17 An interesting and informative File of approx. 20 manuscript Affidavits (some on printed forms) Signed by investigating Excise Police and Magistrates, naming culprits during raids for the making of Poteen, Pot-ale and other Spirits for illegal distillation. mentioning confiscation of pots, pans and other items. Carlow: [1825-1916] A large File of manuscript Applicants, approx. 40 for notifications for planting of Trees in the Carlow area. The names recorded including Dr. Wm.Leahy, T. Haughton of Kelvin Gove, John Cornwall of Myshall, Wm. Fishbourne, Adam Feltus, Sir Denys Burton, as a File, w.a.f. (1) Note: By the late 17th Century, most of Ireland's natural woodland had been felled. In 1765 an Act was put in place to encourage replanting. Included is a deposition for Rev. Charles Grogan relating to embezzlement in 1849. Also three statements relating to fraudulent transactions carried out in 1846, of the Bagenalstown Loan Fund which Grogan was a Treasurer. Interesting File highlighting misappropriation.
