(1) * The author was born in Oldcastle, Co. Meath in November 1829. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin with the intention of joining the medical profession, but he preferred the law. In his spare time he wrote for the press. He emigrated to America in 1851, and later worked for the Boston Post, & the New York Times.
