First Edn., a v.g. plus clean copy of the 1927 First Edn., Inscribed by the Author to the ffep - “autographed with great pleasure for Judge TW Brown, JL Hardy, July ‘36,”The ffep also bears the ownership inscription of TW Brown. This book comes from the library of Judge James Brown QC, a County Court Judge from County Down who chaired the Internment Review Tribunal in Northern Ireland from August 1971 to May 1972 (presumably the son of Judge TW Brown), yellow cloth, repair to the spine. (1) Note: A Bodley Head P.O.W. escape memoir of which this is an uncommon example. The routine in German camps like Halle, Magdeburg and Zorndorf are well described, and the planning and execution of Hardy’s four (and ultimately successful) escape attempts are given in exciting detail. Among his fellow prisoners were Duncan Grinnell- Milne, with whom Hardy carried out one failed escape, and Roland Garros. Hardy eventually got away and back to the Great War in company with Capt. W.C. Loder-Symonds. After the war (DSO, MC and bar) Hardy, with one leg amputated, became an assassin in Ireland serving in British Intelligence efforts against Sinn Fein and the IRA. One of his victims is alleged to have been the grandfather of the Irish actor Brendan O’Carroll of the TV show, ‘Mrs. Brown’s Boys.’This was featured in the BBC Programme ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ with Brendan O’Carroll. The Foreword is by Arthur Conan Doyle who took a different view of Captain Hardy. “ I can say for himwhat he would be the last to say of himself,” writes Conan Doyle, “that a more gallant and chivalrous gentleman never stepped.. like many men of action Captain Hardy writes excellent English.” €250 - €320 64.
