Important ScottishWages Book Manuscript: Receipts for wages paid to servants by “The Hon. Mrs Stewart” , commencing 15 May 1776, each entry being Signed by the Servant in Question with name or mark; function in house sometimes given (housekeeper, nursery maid, etc.). The family was based successively at Castlestewart, Dumfries, Edinburgh, Holyrood House, Portpatrick, Carlisle, Bristol, Clifton, and again at Carlisle, down to 1812; the entries continue with receipts paid by “Miss Stewart” in Edinburgh down to 10 Nov. 1832. At the back is a register of the enrolment of servants from 1772 to 1829; the later entries are more detailed, e.g. “May 1814, Andrew Aiddy came to be footman. He is to have twelve guineas the first year [and] to have his clothes washed. Tea to breakfast he is to provide for himself.” As a m/ss., w.a.f.
