Secret Service Photograph Book An Army issue indexed Ledger, Folio, containing Photographs (printed or original, loose or laid down) of some 50 persons, mostly male, many of them with Republican associations, with a memorandum from Viscount Powerscourt laid in at front, identifying it as ‘The Secret Service Officers Photograph Book’, apparently given to him by Desmond FitzGerald after the ratification of the Treaty, and also containing a cloth badge reading B2/16 which apparently was Fitzgerald’s prison badge. The principal photograph, inside front cover, is a panorama of members of the Dail from the Illustrated London News with names written in below. Other identified photos include Ernest Blythe, Richard Mulcahy, Michael Collins, Pierce Beasley, Wm. Cosgrave, De Valera, Sean Etchingham, Desmond FitzGerald himself, (Fr.) Micheal Ó Flannagáin, Arthur Griffith, John [Seán] Hogan (Tipperary), Robert Monteith, etc. etc. Many of them are of poorish quality, from an identification point of view. A remarkable document; There seems no reason to doubt its authenticity. Desmond FitzGerald, a 1916 veteran, was Director of Publicity for the First Dáil and later Minister for External Affairs 1922-27. It is certainly plausible that he would have made it his business to get to know such as Lord Powerscourt, and vice versa, as an archive. (1) €2,000 - €3,000 839
