Born in Kirkee, India, of Anglo-Indian parents, Birdie served on several Indian Army campaigns. After a distinguished career during the First WorldWar - he was responsible for organising the evacuation of Gallipoli in 1915-16 - Birdwood was appointed to the Executive Council of the Governor- General of India in July 1925. A month later he was promoted to Commander- in-Chief, India, a position he held until his retirement in 1930.
