V. good. Ex. Rare. (1) €200 - €300 831. ‘Our Duty In The Future’ Frank Aiken, Chief of Staff, Oglaigh na hEireann (I.R.A.) An important cyclostyled typed letter dated 28 May 1923, following De Valera’s cease-fire order of May 24, explaining to all Officers that armed resistance has been called off, and outlining their duties in this new situation. ‘The dumping of arms does not mean that the usefulness of the I.R.A. is past, or release any member of it from his duty to his country. On the contrary .. it is clearly our duty to maintain the Army Organisation intact.’The letter instructs that discipline must be maintained, reports returned, and officers ‘must do their utmost to safeguard their men and get them back to their civilian work .. no man must leave Ireland unless ordered by G.H.Q. to do so.’ Scarce and important. With a selection of other contemporary documents including a cyclostyled letter issued over De Valera’s name giving instructions on political activity in prisons, dated 28 May 1923; and four various manuscript documents (one headed ‘Copy’, damaged) concerning internal I.R.A. communications, I.R.A. appointments in prison camps etc. Frank Aiken, later a Minister in successive Fianna Fail governments, was I.R.A. chief- of-staff for a short period in 1923. The names listed by prison numbers, including Sean Mac Craith, James Kavanagh, Seaghan Ua Mathghamhna, Padraic O’Maille, Thos. Mc Ellistrom, Dick Fitzgerald (Kerry Footballer), Donnchadh Mac Con Uladh, J.M. Stanley (Republican printer), W.J. Brennan - Whitmore (Author), Toirdhealbhach Mac Suibhne (Terence Mac Swiney), Capt. M.F. Lynch, Seamas O’Maoil Eoin, Tomas O’Maoil Eon, M.J. Brennan (Post Master General, Frongoch), Michael Joe Ring, Westport, & others with many names from Cork, Kerry, Clare, Tipperary, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Wexford, Dublin, Louth, etc. etc. This listing was compiled by Con Deere, reportedly at the request of his friend Michael Collins, and is said to be one of only three such lists where signatures are listed in “roll call” order; the other two are in the National Library of Ireland.
