Four documents signed by prominent Magistrates [1798]: Recognisance for Philip Germaine of Lisnavagh, Carlow Signed in June 1800 by Judge Tankerville Chamberlain of the King’s Bench who shared responsibility for the miscarriage of justice at the trial of the executed United Irishman William Orr in 1797. Chamberlain died in May,1802. Appeal by Thomas Byrne signed by Lord Kilwarden ( Arthur Wolfe of Naas) in August 1801. Kilwarden was Lord Chief Justice of Ireland in 1803 when he was piked to death on Thomas Street, Dublin in July 1803 after being dragged from his coach by supporters of Robert Emmet. It was rumoured at the time that he was the father of Wolfe Tone. Deposition from Reverend Thomas Brooke signed in March 1815 by Lord Norbury ( infamously known as The Hanging Judge ). The deposition relates to the trial of John Hickey for the murder of Thomas Brennan. Norbury’s most famous trial was when he acted as judge at the trial of Robert Emmet in 1803. He continually abused Emmet throughout the trial before sentencing him to be hanged, drawn and quartered. Document referring to alleged murder of Andrew Kelly signed in July 1807 by Judge William Lord Downes who was appointed Lord Chief Justice of the King’s Bench to replace Lord Kilwarden after his murder in 1803. Following his death in 1826 Downes was buried, at his own request, in the same tomb in St Anne’s Church, Dublin as the aforementioned Judge Tankerville Chamberlain, his inseparable friend for many years.. As a File, w.a.f. (1) €350 - €500 585. Co. Carlow: Three signed Depositions regarding the rape in Carlow town on 30th June 1774 of Ann Poland wife of William Poland, a Waiter. Two depositions from Ann andWilliam describing how Daniel Keefe and John Byrne had held her while John Holmes, a fisherman, had carnal knowledge of her body. Further stating that Ann’s life is in danger from the said abuse. Deposition from Hercules McCormack and John Foley who went to the assistance of Ann as she was been raped by Holmes in a “waste house” at Castle Street, Carlow whereupon John pulled Holmes “from between the poor creatures leggs” and observed Keefe and Byrne “who had been watching and guarding least anyone should prevent such abuse”. Sworn before and signed by Magistrate William Browne and High Sheriff John Perkins. As a File, w.a.f. (1) €180 - €220 586. Homicide or Accident ? - Co. Carlow Six Documents relating to the death of Tom Farrell in Leighlinbridge, Carlow, his brother Percy was charged with homicide. Containing - Inquest result signed by 12 Jurors and the Coroner Edward Gorman, in which it is stated “there are some doubts that this (death) could have occurred by accident” Depositions from Anne and Bridget Farrell stating that Tom asked his brother Percy for “a penny to get a cropper of whiskey” to which Percy replied “ you are after being drunk today already”.Tom died after a hot nail rod which Percy had been using “making a sixpenny nail” pierced Tom’s chest. Coroner’s report with several signed witness statements including one from Dr Martin Morriss, who it was claimed was drunk when he arrived at the scene. Post Mortem report from Surgeon James Porter and his assistant Dr Daniel Tierney. Recognizance bail bond signed in Dec.1839 by John Mullroney, Publican and Bakery, and Thomas Mullroney, Leaseholder, both fromWells in Leighlinbridge. Printed by T. Carlow Interest: June 1848 Calendar (list) of 66 Prisoners in Carlow Jail. 50 male, youngest 13 years, 16 female, youngest 13 years for Trial at Carlow. Detailing prisoner’s names, age, crime, date of committal, by whom committed and comment “bailed or custody.” Among the crimes recorded are - stealing potatoes, hens, bread, turnips, honey, beef, fleece of a stolen sheep and a gold ring. Four of the prisoners are charged with stealing from James Meyler of Waterford the sum of “One hundred & forty pounds, nineteen shillings & one penny, three farthings. Detailing, petitions, appeals, depositions, civil bill enjectmens, decrees all signed by plaintiffs and by Bessonnett.
