[O’Connell (Daniel)] A mounted Display, with an original manuscript free front Signed by Daniel O’Connell, dated November 17th, 1837 to Mrs. Finch in Birmingham, with a reproduction lithograph Print after Hoffy. (1) €180 - €220 559. With Curt Comment on Daniel O’Connell Queensberry (C. Douglas, Marquess of) A brief Letter dated 14 July, 1829, addressed to William Stewart Esq. Northumberland St., Edinburgh, who was M.P. for Co. Tyrone. Signed clearly by Queensberry and sealed with his seal. As a m/ss., w.a.f. (1) * Charles Douglas, 6th Marquess of Queensberry (great-uncle of 9th Marquess who was the boxing enthusiast and foe of Oscar Wilde). He was a peer for Scotland from 1812 to 1832. He was then staying at Binns House, the seat of Sir James Dalyell. The issue of Catholic Emancipation was a hot topic at this time, and this letter originally enclosed a letter to Dalyell from‘that Blackguard Connell’, on which Queensberry urged Stewart to take action. [Daniel O’Connell] London Union Assurance, a 19th Century facsimile of Daniel O’Connell’s Life Insurance as applied for 13th November 1820 - No. 1739, for the amount of £3,250 with London Union Assurance, approx. 34cms x 20cms, foxed and faded. As a document, w.a.f. (1) €120 - €180 557. ‘You Miscreant Traitors to Ireland’ [O’Connell family and associates]. A file containing (a) ALS, 2 pp, single sheet, from John O’Connell to Martin Burke at the Shelbourne Hotel, 1838, saying his father [Daniel O’Connell], feeling himself a little tired, has not risen till late this morning, and in view of the badness of the weather suggests that any meeting should be adjourned until Friday next; (b) ALS, 6 pp, on Derrynane Abbey headed paper, October 13th 1846, from Kate O’Connell (daughter of Daniel) to the Lord Chief Mason, in a difficult hand, apparently seeking advice on a personal matter; (c) two ALS from Morgan O’Connell (son of Daniel), Nov. 4 1846 to the Chief Baron and August 19 1848 to ‘My dear Pigot’; (d) an ALS from T.M. Ray, 16 Jan. 1840, seeking to arrange a meeting; (e) ALS from Thomas Steele to C. Mc Donnell Esq., undated, concerning a ballot; (f ) a mounted broadside poster issued by Steele (‘O’Connell’s Head Pacificator’), extensively foxed, headed ‘To the Molly Maguires of the Counties of Leitrim, Cavan, & c., June 4 1845’, addressing them as ‘You miscreant Traitors to Ireland’. Interesting collection, sold w.a.f. (1) €600 - €800 561. Parnell and his Lady Autographs A very good Autograph Book containing over 50 signatures of celebrities and others collected by a Miss Mary Burgess of Norwich, in a leatherbound book (somewhat shaken) with brass lock and key. Signatures include Winston Churchill, Charles Stewart Parnell 1889, Katharine [Kitty] Parnell 1891, Parnell’s memorial card 1891, Lloyd George, W.E. Gladstone, Harry Irving, Ellen Terry, Walter Crane, W.W. Asquith, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, etc. etc., some on slips laid down, with a few letters enclosed. Parnell’s signature with Katharine’s on same page is a rare combination. Ms. Burgess apparently did not meet Churchill but sent her book to his secretary and he was happy to oblige. (1) €1000 - €1500
