A Corkman’s Voyage to NewYork in the Year of the Titanic Manuscript: A fascinating eight-page M/ ss Journal of a Voyage to New York aboard the RMS Baltic from 17 to 20 September 1912. The Baltic, once the world’s largest ship, was a White Star liner that sailed the Atlantic between 1904 and 1933. she was involved in several dramatic incidents, including sending the famous iceberg warning to Titanic. The writer, who signs with his initials ‘’B.H.’’ is thought to be Benjamin Haughton (1855 - 1932), a Quaker merchant of Cork who worked actively on behalf of various charitable organisations in the city; he was a member of the Senate of the Irish Free State from 1922 to 1928. On the voyage he was accompanied by his daughter (?) Marjorie, whose 19th birthday was celebrated the day before their arrival. Fellow-passengers includedWilliam Redmond, the passionate Irish nationalist MP and inveterate traveller, the socialite Adele Countess of Essex, and the former Bishop of Ripon William Boyd Carpenter, who preached a lugubrious sermon after a fireman named Doyle threw himself overboard and drowned. There are comments on fellow passengers and on the entertainments provided, which included lectures by two celebrated missionaries, Henry Hodgkin on ‘’China’’ and Ralph Wardlow Thompson on ‘’The Menace of Moslemism’’ As a m/ss. Wanton destruction of houses’ Manuscript Journal : A manuscript Notebook, c. 1922 - 1923, containing mostly legal notes etc., but some daily notes, all in pencil, including one which mentions ‘Wanton destruction of houses.’ Probably a student, studying at the start of the Irish Free State. Weather Records from a Shropshire Home, 1938-1949 A Record of Rain and Temperature kept at Burwarton – Dingle Leys [Shropshire], 1 Jan 1938 to 30 Sept 1949. Oblong roy 4to., strongly bound. Also gives monthly summaries, such as: “A lovely summer month. A splendid hay harvest and partridges look promising” (July 1940). “Coldest month recorded for many years – probably since 1895 – 21 days of continuous frost – easterly current / winds and probably the most sunless month on record. Snow lay very deep but due to drifting impossible to measure. The equivalent would have resulted in over 3’. (February 1947; it was indeed the most severe winter of the century up to that time, and also coincidentally the first year of the ColdWar). Detailed Map of Dublin Property Map: An attractive hand coloured Map , 42cms x 61cms, of a house, garden and environs (unidentified) with covering note to the effect that it was presented on 9 November 1962 by George O’Donnell to Count and Countess Donal O’Kelly de Gallagh ‘’as a small memento of a great occasion in their lives,’’The recipient has not been identified, as there appears to have been no member of this family called Donal in modern times. Its most famous member was the diplomat Gerald Edward O’Kelly de Gallagh et Tycooly (1890 - 1968), whose ancestor had been created a Count of the Holy Roman Empire in 1767. As a m/ss, w.a.f.
