Westmeath : Burgess (Dr. J.B.) The Burgess Papers of Athlone. This collection comprises 26 bound volumes in typescript, the entries dating from c. 1571-1881, and has been assembled from Deeds, Directories, Almanacs, Fiants, Published Sources, Manuscripts, Newspaper, Parish Records, Tombstone & Monumental inscriptions etc. A collection of the first importance for Athlone & surrounding area. One of the most helpful aspects of the collection is the liberal use of indexes. Practically every volume has its index often broken down under separate headings, eg. persons; places; births; marriages and deaths; borough voters; streets; subjects; etc. The 26 volumes were all typed by Dr. Burgess between 1939 and 1956, having commenced collecting the information in 1930. On leaving Athlone in 1951 Dr. Burgess entrusted the entire collection to his friend, Mr. J.O. Simmons, with the proviso, ‘ that this collection is for the town of Athlone, and when there is a place suitable for its storage and use, it is to be deposited there permanently for the people of Athlone,’ This unique collection of basic source material was compiled by a dedicated Athlone man for the people of Athlone, and this faithful photocopy of the entire collection for sale here affords some further institution or collector, the chance to acquire one of very few sets of this importance. * For further study, see Source Journal of Old Athlone Society, article by N.W.
