Sir Walter Scott Authorises payment of a Bill for Illustrations Manuscript: Scott (Sir W.) Note written and signed by Sir Walter Scott, dated at Abbotsford, 2 October 1830, authorising Robert Cadell, (bookseller and publisher) to pay £20 to Alexander Nasmyth Esq, (1758-1840) artist. * Nasmyth frequently illustrated Scott’s works; this bill may be for his contributions to the new 48-volume edition of the Waverley Novels, begun in 1829 and published by Robert Cadell. Letter from a famous Victorian Novelist [Wilkie Collins (1824-1889)] best known for his mystery novel "The Woman in White" and pioneering detective novel "The Moonstone". Written on board SS Algeria at Queenstown, bound for New York, 14 Sept 1873. Collins praises the comfort of his berth, which he shares with Dr Douglas (a brother of the artist Jessica Douglas), “a charming man – cultivated and kind”.
