Carlow 1803-1850] Dillon (Frances) Magistrate , a large File of Manuscript Documents detailing various Cases including ‘Murder of Patrick Doyle, referencing ‘Moll Doyle’ (illegal organization), stealing, arson, land possession, rape,, child abandonment , assault etc., also included personal cases Dillon was involved in (he lived to the age of 105) as a File, w.a.f. Carlow - 1830’s] Geale (Piers) A large File for ‘Witness Expenses,’ Signed by Crown Solicitor of the Home Circuit of Ireland, they relate to Murder, by Poisoning, Manslaughter, Homicide, Child Murder, each printed document with manuscript notes and signatures, as a File, w.a.f. (1) * Piers Geale lived at 65 Mountjoy Square, Dubin, he was allied with many Noble Families by his daughters marriages. His house was known as the “House of Lords”. €180 - €220 517. “Not Hang the Fear of God” Co. Carlow [1835] A small File of manuscript Documents relating to Patrick Oneham of Leighlin Bridge (Yeoman), and his charge for the murder of Margaret Murphy, including list of good and lawful men (as a jury in case) as a file, w.a.f. (1) €150 - €200 518. “Seduced by the Devil” Co. Carlow [1786] A file of manuscript Letters, Inquisitions, Statements etc., relating to the murder of Henry Lawlor of Rathmore, Rathvilly (Co. Carlow) by James Dempsey, Patrickswell (Carlow) one comment states ‘Wholly moved and seduced by the Investigation of the Devil,’ Signed by Jurys, Coroner etc., as a file, w.a.f. (1) €150 - €200 519. [Co. Carlow 1800-1810] A folder of approx. 80 Affidavits concerning the Carlow / Kilkenny area, each Signed by the Plaintiffs and Presiding Assistant Barrister, and interesting an extreme File of legal interesting from the start of the 19th Century detailing with Provincial case, as a File. Carlow: 1890’s, a box File of printed and manuscript Material relating to Applications, Payment Records to the Irish Land Commission dating from 1890s to 1930’s, also some letters, maps, certificates, agreements and related material detailing proceedings under the Land Law Act 1887. Late 17th Century Letter - Re Lands in Galway Manuscript: Strong (Wm.) An ALs. Letter dated 5 August 1684 fromWilliam Strong, Dublin, to Nathaniel Hawes, London, reporting on lands in Galway: “When I was att Galway I took some notice of the Hospitalls concern there. All the houses on ye North suburbs at least 200 are on yr land & more likely to be with little garden plots. I mean Irish Houses of ye better sort ? not less worth than 20s per Acre being soe neer the town & the Country about itt covered with Rocks.” As a m/ss, w.a.f. (1) €100 - €150 522. Anti-vivisection Letters from Frances Power Cobbe, 1903 Two Letters to an unnamed friend written by Frances Power Cobbe (1822-1904) , the indomitable social reform campaigner from Newbridge, Co. Dublin, then living at Hengwrt in north Wales. The first concerns her ongoing campaign against vivisection. In the second, she attaches a letter published in the Daily Chronicle from Maria Georgina Grey (1816-1906), advocate of education for women, denouncing bias in that paper’s review of The Shambles of Science by Swedish animal rights campaigner Lizzy Lind af Hageby (1903): “The one unassailable argument against vivisection: it is doing evil that good may come”. Cobbe comments: “Is not this fine, of dear old Mrs Grey? She has been 10 years lying on her back with spine disease & is well past 80” (Cobbe was herself over eighty at the time!).
