A plea against cruelty to animals, lower portion of letter cut away, alas. (1) * Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna (1790-1846) was a popular and prolific writer and novelist who campaigned on behalf of women’s rights and evangelical Protestantism - despite her tragic life: temporary blindness and then permanent deafness in childhood, an unhappy marriage (to a Captain George Phelan of Co. Kilkenny), and the deaths of loved ones. As a m/ss, w.a.f. (1) €90 - €140 502. Co. Cork: [Sir Robert Tilson] An 18th Century Indenture relating to leases to William Galwey of Mallow, for a small Orchard, (part of the Townland of Annabella), for three lives (all members of the Royal Family) dated 21 August 1774 from Sir Robert Tilson (Dean of Dromore, Co. Cork). On vellum with seals etc. As a manuscript, w.a.f. (1) €100 - €150 503. Irish Merchant in 18th Century Maryland, U.S.A. Co. Louth: [Edward Fottrill] An 18th Century Manuscript Legal Document relating to lands owned in Baltimore, granting power of attorney on behalf of the heirs of the Estate Robert and Acsah Taffee, Signed by Forbes and Thwaites and are attested by those of ten merchants and inhabitants, dated 10 July 1764. Paper document, as a manuscript, w.a.f. (1) €100 - €150 505. A Letter from Samuel Carter Hall Co. Wexford: Original Brief Letter, Signed by S.C. Hall (editor of The Art Journal, and co-creator with his wife, Anna Maria Fielding, of the iconic Ireland, its scenery, character, etc.). Dated from Ballystraw (near Duncannon, where they were presumably visiting the Allen family), Sep. 9 (no year), and addressed to “Gough Esq.” (?of Ballyorley House, Boolavogue), regretting that he and his wife will be unable to call on them at Tintern when on their way to Bannow (i.e, to Graigue House, Mrs Hall’s family home), before their departure for England. As a m/ss., w.a.f. (1) €180 - €250 506. Co. Meath: A large 18th Century Vellum Lease / Indenture, dated 29 Oct., 1789, whereby Robert Ormsby of Grove, Co. Roscommon, renews to Anne, Elizabeth and Margaret Everard of Navan, spinsters, the lease of their house in Navan for 31 years at a rent of £45.10.0, as a m/ss., w.a.f. (1) €100 - €150 504. A Lease Signed by Henry Grattan in County Laois Co. Laois: Indenture dated 7 September 1805 whereby the Irish statesman Henry Grattan (1746-1820) grants to William Dunn a lease for lives of a piece of ground in Vicarstown, Queen’s Co., on which he has erected a stone cabin. The tenant is to pay separately for his outhouses and garden, the amount being marked **. Signed by Grattan and with an endorsement in his hand dated 30 July 1813 stating “Tis intended by the parties to this indenture the blank so asteriated ** should be filled up with the word peppercorn,” as a m/ss. (1) €350 - €500 511 507. Important Early Manuscript Map Co. Monaghan: An18th-century Estate Map of Co. Monaghan by celebrated cartographer brothers, large manuscript Map on vellum, of the estates in Co. Monaghan of Col. Thomas Marlay and Hugh Crofton a minor, scale 40 perches per inch, signed by Richard and Charles Frizell, Sept. 1769. Endorsements by Thomas Marlay of Celbridge and Morgan Crofton of Dublin, 1769, and by Henry Upton, 1771, approx. 84cms x 87cms (33” x 34”). As a m/ss map, w.a.f. highly detailed and important. * The Frizell brothers were professional land surveyors and cartographers whose skills were often utilised by landowners on account of their detailed and accurate work.
