Kildare An Irish George II, c. 1760, red walnut Architect’s Table, the finely figured ratcheted lift top revealing a baize lined surface, above a pull-out front drawer with central brass handle, which opens to a fitted interior, on square fretwork spandrels, the legs incorporating engaged columns on original castors. (1) Provenance: Removed from Castletown House, circa 1966, and thereafter retained in a private collection in County Kildare. €1400 - €1800 688. An attractive Georgian style mahogany and satinwood crossbanded Sofa Table, probably Hicks, with demi-lune flaps above a frieze with two drawers with ornate handles, with straight uprights, united by turned stretcher on outsplayed legs with hairy paw castors, approx. 152cms opened x 61cms deep x 74cms high (60” x 24” x 29”). (1) €200 - €300 689. An Irish 19th Century carved mahogany Open Armchair, of low proportions, stamped M. Butler, the deep button back issuing upholstered arms and carved uprights, on front paw carved feet. (1) €200 - €300 686 687 690. A Georgian style spiral Library Steps, with pillar handle and leather inset steps, on turned tapering legs. (1) €200 - €300 682. A very fine rosewood Sofa Table, inlaid with satinwood and ebony, the frieze fitted with two drawers with circular brass pulls, the opposing side with identically decorated dummy drawers, above twin supports, united by an arched stretcher, raised on down swept sabre legs terminating in stylized brass caps and castors, approx. 66cms deep x 148cms open x 73cms high (26” x 58” x 29”). For a comparable example, see Plate 268, Vol. I, one of a pair of sofa tables supplied by Gillows in 1803, to Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall. The first sofa table to appear in the ‘Estimate Sketch Book’ featured in 1801, at the same time as the Clonbrock commission, see plate 269, Stuarts Gillows of Lancaster & London, 1730-1840, indicating that this sofa table from Clonbrock was one of the first tables of its type to be produced by Gillows.
