Clark, British (1850-1921) “British Landscape with Cottage in foreground and Figure at Gate,” and its companion, a similar scene with “Ducks on a Lane with Lake and Cottage,”O.O.C., each approx. 50cms x 75cms (20” x 29½”) both Signed and dated lower left, ‘O.T. A fine quality Irish Georgian period Chest, the moulded top of four graduating long drawers, with brass drop handles on bracket feet, 92cms wide x 97cms high x 58cms deep (36” x 38” x 23”). A fine quality Victorian giltwood Overmantel, the top with central cartouche design issuing leaf scrolls, the original plate mirror inside a bead work egg n’ dart moulded frame, on a conforming base, approx. 206cms high x 178cms wide (81” x 70”). (1) €800 - €1200 916. A fine quality Regency period mahogany cased Regulator Longcase Clock, the hood with temple top above glazed door housing circular silvered dial with subsidiary dial by W. H. Davis, the trunk with glazed door, wood rod pendulum, and single brass weight, approx. 188cms (74”) high. (1) €700 - €1000 920. James Butler Brenan (1825-1889) “Portrait of a Gentleman and Portrait of a Lady,” depicting 'Thomas Stephen Copinger and his wife Annette (daughter of Sir John Power First Bart of Edermine, Co. Wexford), a pair, O.O.C., each in matching R. &W. Clarke gilt frames, 89cms x 69cms (35” x 27”). (2) Depicting a man of about fifty years of age, wearing a dark jacket, waistcoat and holding a walking stick, and a woman, slightly younger, wearing a dark blue dress with a lace collar, these two portraits, evidently a pair, are typical of the work of James Butler Brenan. She wears a jeweled brooch at her throat, and holds a book in her right hand, a detail often found in portraits of the period. Born in Cork in 1825, James Butler Brenan (or Brennan) was the son of the landscape painter John Brenan. He lived in Cork throughout his life and developed a successful portrait practice, depicting many people from the city and its environs. Exhibiting at the RHA from 1843 onwards, he was elected ARHA in 1861 and became a full academician ten years later. Among his portrait subjects were the Earls of Bandon and Bantry, Sir Thomas Deane, Sir John Pope Hennessy, Mrs. Hewitt Poole Jellett and Mrs. R. Cole Bowen of Bowen’s Court. Other paintings by him include The Raising of the Widow’s Son, shown at the RHA in 1843, and Age Receiving Instruction fromYouth, shown at the Cork Exhibition of 1852.
