Attributed to Charles d'Agar (1669-1723) “Portrait of James Lenthall of Burford Priory Oxfordshire,” O.O.C., inscribed lower left, approx. 145cms x 106cms (57” x 42”) in contemporary ornate carved gilt frame. (1) * A striking depiction of James Lenthall, son of William Lenthall (d. 1686) and Catherine Hamilton (daughter of James Hamilton, Lord Paisley, who later married Charles Hamilton, 5th Earl of Abercorn). The young sitter is rendered in Roman dress, a classical costume evoking the ideals of virtue and learning. At his feet rests a tri-coloured hound, a charming companion and symbol of fidelity. In the distance, the 15th-century spire of Burford Church rises against a serene landscape, situating the sitter within his familial estate and Oxfordshire heritage.
