The then Archbishop (John Charles McQuaid) issued a letter to all parishes to be read out declaring that all Catholics be banned from attending the match, due primarily to the persecutions of a Catholic Bishop Stepinac, for the communist Regime in Yugoslavia. The church and state pulled rank and barred the army band from playing, Radio Eireann did not broadcast the match either. A Rare Survivor of an Event which included Sport, Church and Politics.
