194 IMPERFECTIONS NOT STATED info@fonsiemealy.ie fm 1063 IRISH HOSPITAL SWEEPSTAKES A small Archive assembled by a long-time Sweepstakes Worker including: - An extensive collection of original Sweeps tickets (mostly unissued), 1930-64, 1969-74 neatly mounted in two albums; - A bound volume of Sweeps Draw programmes 1936-37 in a leather bound album, apparently Vol. VII of a larger collection; - A collection of related ephemera and publications sponsored by or associated with the Sweeps, including three paperbacks issued by the Good Luck Club (two by Spencer Freeman), three Good Luck lapel badges, a Hospital Trust sports club ticket, a menu for the cold bu ff et at the Irish Sweeps Derby 1962, a folder of photographs relating to Donegal Carpets (then owned by the Sweeps), a typed report relating to Waterford Glass and a few other items. (1) € 800 - 1200 1066 Sean Milroy Photograph by International Film Service, New York - caption on back: ‘ ’SINN FEINER WHO ESCAPED FROM JAIL” - John Milroy one of the leaders of the Sinn Fein movement in Dublin who recently escaped from jail where he had been con fi ned with a number of others of the movement.’’ Date: 24 Feb 1919. Sean Milroy broke out from Lincoln Jail on February 3rd, 1919, along with Eamon de Valera and Sean McGarry, in an escape organised personally by Michael Collins. € 75 - 100 1068 Cogaidh na Saoirse County Kerry Medals: War of Independence, a set of three Irish decorated brass War of Independence Medals awarded to Members of the McCarthy Family, Co. Kerry, the obverse of each with soldier and Provincial coat of arms, and inscribed “Cogadh na Saoirse,”with black and amber (tan) ribbons on clasps, in original presentation boxes. (3) Provenance: The McCarthy Family by direct descent. € 700 - 900 1065 Family Association Copy Ó hAnnracháin (Mícheál) A Swordsman of the Brigade. Sands, Ed. & L., n.d., red cloth with black titles (second issue binding). Portrait reattached. A family association copy,signed on f.f.e.p. by Mary O’Hanrahan (author’s mother), Cis, Marie and Eily (sisters) and Harry (brother), cutting with portrait of Harry attached to prelim, with a presentation inscription. Micheál Ó hAnnracháin (O’Hanrahan) (1877- 1916), from a Wexford Fenian family, was a founder member and quartermaster-general of the Irish Volunteers. During the Rising he was second-in-command to Thomas MacDonagh at Jacob’s, Bishop Street. He was sentenced to death and executed on 4 May. His brother Harry was also sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted. (1) € 200 - 300 1064 ‘The Mountjoy Heroes’ A very rare photographic postcard showing a group of about 25 men who took part in “The Great Hunger Strike, April 1920” including Phil Shanahan TD, with key to names, by J.J. Mooney, Dublin, mounted on card, adhesive tape at corners. (1) € 100 - 150 1067 Piaras Beaslai: A fi ne portrait photograph by Lafayette showing Piaras in middle age, head and shoulders, wearing a Fainne, approx. 8” x 6”, mounted and in original folder; with a copy of the memorial issue of ‘An t-Oglach’Vol. 1 No. II, Winter 1965, dedicated to P. Beaslai. * Piaras Beaslai fought in the G.P.O. during 1916 and was an active Volunteer during the War of Independence, and a close associate of Michael Collins, whose biography he wrote. J.) - 157372], a Medal Group comprising seven Medals from both Wars, also two Uniform Patches, all ribbons and bars present, also a photograph of Corporal J. Greet, displayed in a contemporary frame.
