O’Du ff y brie fl y resumed command of the Army. The fi le includes a typescript list (carbon copy) headed “Old I.R.A. Men’s Association. Re-Organised I.R.B. etc. etc.” listing a number of ‘persons of high rank’ under columns headed ‘Engaged in its activities’ and ‘In touch, in sympathy or coquetting with the organisation.’ the fi rst column is headed by Joe Mc Grath TD, Maj. Gen. Liam Tobin and Major Gen. Tom Cullen’ (all associates of Michael Collins), etc. (two pages), with a further three page list of ‘O ffi cers who resigned owing to crises’ with manuscript additions in O’Du ff y’s hand, in all over 100 names. Also with a later exchange between O’Du ff y and Mulcahy, as follows: Press report headed “General Mulcahy resents a speech” (by O’Du ff y); a draft reply in O’Du ff y’s hand (Evidently to Mulcahy, headed ‘Personal’); and an A.L.s. from Mulcahy to O’Du ff y, 7.11.24, accepting O’Du ff y’s explanation, 4pp, with a few related documents; and also a manuscript document in O’Du ff y’s hand headed “While G.O.C.F.’ listing improvements in pay, pensions and conditions achieved under his command, and a two page manuscript document, in his hand apparently text of an address to trainee o ffi cers. (1) € 800 - 1000 1044 Creating a Neutral Zone at the Border in 1922 [O’Du ff y (Eoin) & Mulcahy (R.)] An important fi le containing original documents relating to agreements between the Provisional Government and the British Government in June 1922, establishing a so-called ‘neutral zone’ on both sides of the border in the area of Belleek and Pettigo, including a typescript memo with manuscript additions, signed initials, from Richard Mulcahy (Aire Chosanta) to ‘Ceann Fuirinne’ (Chief of Army Sta ff , Eoin O’Du ff y), 21.6.22, with accompanying memorandum setting out the arrangements agreed when the Minister and Comdt. Hogan met Colonel Brind, Co. Evans and Mr. Cope on 21 June (1922), providing that ‘ with a view to preserving order on the Border that, as an experiment, British troops shall occupy the villages of Belleek, Pettigo,Garrison, Kesh and the surrounding area,’ etc; that units of the Special Constabulary and elements of the Provisional Government and Republican forces shall remove themselves from the area; that there will be no searches or arrests other than by civil police, etc. Also with a copy memo from Comdt. Hogan indicating that he was discourteously treated by British troops when on o ffi cial business in the area; a note signed by Gen. Mulcahy forwarding Hogan’s report to the Chairman, Provisional Government, 28.6.22; a memo to Chief of Sta ff (O’Du ff y) from T. Glennon, Divisional Adjutant, Oglaigh na hEireann, 23.6.1922, with details of British activities in Free State territory near Belleek, etc., and a few other related documents. The agreement was an attempt to stop clashes between “B” Specials and Republicans in the border area, but it apparently was not a success. As an Archive File, w.a.f. (1) € 1000 - 1500 AN CLÓ-CHUMANN Ltd A strongly bound hf. morocco folio ledger containing the original manuscript Minutes of meetings of the board of Directors, 322 numbered pages, 1903-09, some countersigned by Eoin MacNeill, including full details of the company’s business and fi nancial situation over half a decade; also the company’s letter-book, containing carbon copies of outgoing mail, 1903-07, manuscript and typescript, 998 numbered pages, in a worn calf-backed ledger, including copy letters to various writers, printers, publishers,suppliers etc. Includes fi ve copy letters to Pearse, pp. 436, 763, 823, 934, 963, copy letters to Hyde and many others(see index at front), e.g. copy letter on p. 634 to P. Kelly complaining about late arrival of copy for ‘An Claidheamh Soluis’; copy letter p. 494 to (the writer) Mícheál Breathnach about proofs; copy letter p. 495 to the secretary of the typographical union denying a complaint about apprentices; estimates p. 713 to P. Ó Dálaigh for printing Gaelic League Ardfheis reports; p. 681, reply to Ms. O’Farrelly about supply of books; etc. An absolute treasure- house of information about the printing and publishing scene in Gaelic Dublin in the fi rst decade of the last century. An Cló-Chumann was set up by a group associated with Conradh na Gaeilge as an independent concern, to print for commercial customers as well as Conradh. It printed work by authors including Pearse and many others, before it eventually failed essentially for fi nancial reasons. Little has been known about its business in detail, but the two present volumes will for the fi rst time allow a full history to be written. A discovery of major importance.
