The contents include a Manuscript Journal kept by Ellen Perowne, beginning with her departure from Hartlebury Castle (the residence of her father, the Bishop of Worcester); extracts from a journal of the cruise printed in a magazine; commercial photographs of buildings and monuments they visited; Ellen’s own more informal photographs; and ephemera such as menus and programmes for concerts and parties. She accompanied her father, the Bishop and her brother Connop Perowne, both of whom gave lectures and guided tours, while Ellen helped with the entertainments. (Bishop Perowne was a respected Hebrew scholar, well known for his moderate views on biblical scholarship.) The scrapbook also contains items relating to a later cruise of the Argonaut in which Ellen Perowne took part, departing from Hull and visiting the Norwegian fj ords and the North Cape in July and August 1901. The Argonaut had been built in 1879, and was now owned by Henry Lunn World Travel. She had recently been fi tted with new boilers and engines, and had fi rst-class facilities for its 120 passengers. She came to grief on 29 September 1908, when she collided with a steamer in a fog and sank rapidly; no lives were lost, but the passengers lost all their possessions.
