(1) € 180 - 220 885 Collection Relating to Cotton Merchant Platt (James) (1888-1948) of High fi eld Hall, Northrop, Flintshire, a Liverpool businessman, founded in 1921 the cotton broking fi rm of James Platt & Co. He was a JP of Flintshire from 1930 and was High Sheri ff of the county in 1936. He was also a keen yachtsman and cricketer. In 1935 he stood as Conservative candidate for Liverpool Wavertree, where a by-election became due when the sitting MP was elevated to the peerage as Lord Brocket. Platt was strongly tipped to win, but the unexpected arrival of Lord Randolph Churchill as an Independent Conservative candidate split the Conservative vote and - after a campaign that received nationwide coverage - handed the seat to the Labour candidate, Joseph Cleary (he lost again in the general election nine months later).
