Luce, TCD, on the Common Place Book of Bishop Berkeley (BL MS 39305). Arthur Aston Luce (1882-1977) was Professor of Philosophy at Trinity College, Dublin, and was Vice-Provost from 1946 to 1952; his 65- year fellowship from 1912 until his death is the longest in the history of the college. He was also Precentor of St Patrick’s Cathedral. He became a world-renowned authority on Bishop Berkeley, co-authoring the nine-volume edition of Berkeley’s works (1948-57) and publishing (among other works) monographs on Berkeley’s philosophical commentaries (1944) and life (1949) - in addition to Fishing and Thinking (1959) and A History of the Dublin Chess Club (1967). He discovered new sources and better ways of interpreting the existing sources, and in general brought about a major reassessment of Berkeley both as a philosopher and as a person. These volumes contain his transcription and notes on Berkeley’s commonplace book, which has been described as “one of the most interesting documents in the history of philosophy: it reveals the struggles of a youthful, earnest and energetic mind with the growth of skepticism and shows Berkeley’s approach to the doctrine of idealism.” As a manuscript, w.a.f.
