White of Tipperary, by Robert White, Grafton St., Dublin, on Tuesday March 18th, 1817, per favour Leonard Doherty Esq., Jnr. Tipperary. He hopes for her wisdom and happiness, with the aid of some meteorological images: Be happy and be blest, thro’ space and time, And think of him, whose friendship prompts the rhyme . (1) € 80 - 120 839 Father of “The Cripple Kavanagh” Kavanagh (Thomas) A single page A.L.s. from T. Kavanagh, Burlington Hotel, London, July 8th, 1830 to Rev. Thomas Vigors (of Burgage, Co. Carlow, Rector of Powerstown, Co. Kilkenny) asking for his support in the forthcoming election. As a m/ss., w.a.f. (1) * Thomas Kavanagh, Borris House, Co. Carlow (1767-1837) was M.P. for Kilkenny, 1797 - 1799, and for Carlow 1826 - 31, and 1835 - 37. He was proprietor of a huge landed estate, he was considered ‘charitable and benevolent’ by all, and it was said of him that ‘he descended from a line of princes, he was princely in thought, word & deed.’ By his second wife, Lady Harriet Margaret le Poer Trench, he was father of the amazing Arthur Mac Murrough Kavanagh, or ‘The Cripple Kavanagh’. (1) € 200 - 300 840 Letter from an Irish O ffi cer in Malta, 1827 Mayne (Capt E.C.): A Letter (4 pp, cross- written) written by Captain Edward C. Mayne, 95 th Regiment, Malta, to his father John Mayne in Dublin, 20 January 1827. An interesting document, containing comments on regimental life, enquires for members of the family, and impressions of conditions in Ireland as reported in the press. According to The Sedborough Family of Ireland (online), the writer was Edward Colburne Mayne , the son of Captain John Mayne of “Platanus”, Lower Leeson St., Dublin, and his wife Theodosia, daughter of John Colburne. His father was the son of Lieutenant Edward Mayne of Cootehill, 93 rd Dragoons (1772-1855). Edward was born in 1801 and his brother William (mentioned in the letter) in 1808. Their mother died in 1810 and their father married again in 1813 and had three sons: Dawson (“Has Dawson not gone to school as yet, if not I think he soon ought, he promised to be a very fi ne boy”), Robert and John. Edward joined the 95 th (Derbyshire) Foot as a lieutenant in 1824, was promoted to captain in 1826, and retired on half pay in 1830. He later emigrated to New South Wales, where he became a cattle and land speculator. His ventures failed, he went bankrupt, returned to Ireland, and died in 1850. (1) € 80 - 120 842 Letter Pertaining to Rathmines Castle, 1843 Manuscript: Letter (3 pp) written by Jane Arthur of Sea Point, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, 14 February 1843, to Messrs Stewart and Kincaid, Leinster Street (agents for Lord Palmerston), re the letting of Rathmines Castle. Henry John Temple, 3 rd Viscount Palmerston, one of the great prime ministers of the Victorian era, inherited considerable estates in Ireland. Rathmines Castle was rented to the Arthur family, whose lease was due to expire shortly. In this letter, Jane Arthur, writing on behalf of her brother and sister, puts the case for renewing the lease, pointing to improvements that have been carried out and the potential for further development. Galway: An interesting Document addressed to Excise O ffi ce in Galway from the Collector of ‘Quit’ Rents re: payment of the tolls on the bridge that had replaced the ferry at Portumna, dated 10 December 1844, denying the request as being responsible for arrears, as a manuscript, w.a.f. (1) € 150 - 200 841 Naval Interest: [Rokeby (Sir Richard)] an interesting 19th Century Naval Account Manuscript Book, for the ‘HMS Eden’ (a 24 Gun Sixth Rate Warship) which was commanded by Sir Richard Rokeby o ff the Coast of Africa 1830 - 37, approx. 30pps (interleaved) in contemp full red mor., as a manuscript, w.a.f.
