98 Imperfections Not Stated Fonsie Mealy’s Est. 1934 701. The Returned Volunteers . Important photograph by Keogh Brothers, 30cms x 38cms, mounted, showing a large party of Irish 1916 Volunteers, with a few family members, after their release from British jails, photographed outside Dublin’s Mansion House. The prisoners were released by a British Government decision of June 15 1917, ostensibly to secure a favourable atmosphere for the deliberations of the Irish Convention; but also because Sinn Fain had started nominating prisoners to contest Parliamentary by-elections. In any case the releases were widely welcomed. Eoin MacNeill can be seen prominently near the centre here, second row from front, wearing an old-fashioned tie, with his arm ostentatiously around Eamon De Valera’s shoulder to stress their reconciliation. Some of the others did not live to see the independence they had fought so hard to achieve. A photograph of historic importance in Ireland’s path to independence, an excellent copy.
