Castlereagh Industrial Photograph Album A very good Album of Photographs from the British Tabulating Company (BTC) plant at Castlereagh, late 1940s, exteriors and interiors, including close shots of machinery, workers etc., evidently professionally photographed. BTC is best known as one of the suppliers for the ‘Enigma’ code breaking machinery at Bletchley Park in Britain during WorldWar II. The work at Castlereagh concerned assembly of their Hollerith machines. The Album itself (large oblong quarto) needs attention (upper cover detached), but the photographs are in excellent condition, as an Album, w.a.f. (1) €400 - €600 674 675. [Famine Period] Co. Leitrim, a printed Letter to Tenants Signed by John Law (Agent of Lord Leitrim) dated Milford November 1847, stating that ‘the abandonment of the ruinous system of Rundale being an indispensable preliminary to any improvement in the condition of the tenantry .. the Earl of Leitrim is willing to accept a surrender of the Leases in such Townlands as are still in Rundale - so that each Tenant may hold his land in one compact and separate farm’ on stated terms, etc. Issued to a Magharabeg tenant. Single sheet with integral blank. ‘Rundale’ was a landholding system common before the Famine, especially in Western counties, whereby land was held in common and allocated to tenants in strips, so that each tenant had a mixture of good and bad land. A Relic of Black ‘47 The Great Famine: A mid-19th Century ‘Famine Pot’ in original condition, approx. 69cms (27”) diameter, possibly by Darby of Coalbrooke. (1) * In 1846 the Quakers provided 294 ‘Coire’ or big Cauldrons, which sole purpose was to feed the starving population in Ireland in the packed workhouses. The Quakers were responsible and played a pivotal role in mobilising relief aid to the Country. €500 - €600 672.
