Fonsie Mealy’s Est. 1934 Medals: G.A.A., Hurling [Kilkenny 1907 - 1912] An important Group of four 9ct gold Celtic Cross All-Ireland Hurling Winners Medals, each obverse with raised design and pierced centre. Inscribed around the rim‘Cumann Luith gCleas Gaedhael,’ and ‘Eire’ across the centre. The reverse with variant inscription as follows: (a) “All-Ireland Hurling Championship 1907 - won by Kilkenny R. Doherty,” hallmarked . * This was Kilkenny’s Third All-Ireland title, captained by Dick “Drug,”Walsh they beat Cork 3.12 to 4.8, the final took place at Fraher Field in Dungarvan, on 21st June 1908. (b) “All-Ireland Hurling C’ship 1909 won by Kilkenny R. Doherty,” hallmarked. * This was the Cats 4th All-Ireland Title, once again captained by ‘Drug’Walsh, they beat Tipperary on a score line of 4.6 to 0.12. The final was played at Cork Athletic Grounds, Cork on 12 December 1909. (c) “All-Ireland Hurling Championship won by Kilkenny 1911,” hallmarked. This was the Noresiders 5th All-Ireland Title. The Championship was not without controversy. The Final was supposed to have been played between Limerick and Kilkenny, but the Treaty Men refused to complete at Thurles, after the original match at Cork was postponed in February 1911 due to the pitch’s condition. As a result of refusal, Tipperary were nominated to play Kilkenny. The Final eventually took place at Fraher Field, Dungarvan on 28th July 1912, the Cats won 3.3. to 1.1.; (d) “All Ireland Hurling C’ship 1912. Won by Kilkenny - R. Doherty,” hallmarked. * It was the 25th staging of the All-Ireland Final. it was the Noresiders 6th title, the match was played at Jones Road, with an attendance of 18,000. the Cats played the rebels on 17th November 1912 and beat them 2.1 to 1.3.
