An original A.L.s. on Sgoil Eanna Notepaper, dated 13 Sept. 1915, 1pp, to a Mrs. Walsh, saying Patrick [presumably her son] has settled down well, and enclosing the school’s account ‘at the reduced rate agreed, and shall be very grateful for cheque.’Minor damage with loss of a few letters, not obscuring the meaning. With two further items, an American leaflet dated 16 May 1916 concerning ‘Freedom’s Martyrs’, and a Dail Eireann loan receipt issued to Aodh Mac a’Mhaoir [Weir], 25 Iuil 1919, signed by Daithi O Donnchchadha, Runai, all with a covering letter from Comh Choiste Leabharlanna Longfoirt-Iarmhi, 15.6.1968, thanking Dr. Hugh Weir of Mullingar for loan of these items for a 1916 exhibition. The Pearse Letter is not in O Buachalla’s collection. Pearse was under urgent financial pressure at this time. As a collection, w.a.f. (1) €600 - €800 707. Gaelic Interest: [Irish Language] Two early gold ‘Fainne Oir’ Pins (Connradh na Gaeilge period) on long steel pin. (2) €200 - 300 708. [Pearse (Padraig)] Saint Enda’s (Scoil Eanna) an early 20th Century oak folding Children’s School Desk, with inkwell, with stamp underneath “Scoil Eanna” in rectangular box. Unusual and Scarce. (1) Scoil Eanna was set up as a secondary school for boys in 1908 in Ranelagh by Irish Nationalist and 1916 Proclamation signatory Padraig Pearse. €400 - €500 709 – See page 103 710. [Mac Eoin, Lieut. Gen. Sean (1910-1998)] His Prayer Book , Gill’s, in an attractive embossed leather cover, much worn, incomplete at front, packed with cuttings, death notices, prayers etc., inscribed at front in pencil ‘Sean Mac Eoin, Custume Barracks, Athlone.’ Includes a Franciscan enrolment form referring to ‘Army Detachment Serving in the Congo,’ where he was commanding officer of the Irish U.N. force 1961-2. Not to be confused with Sean Mac Eoin the elder (1874-1973) the War of Independence veteran and Presidential candidate, w.a.f. (1) * Mac Eoin was born in County Louth in the Cooley Peninsula, he became a Cadet in 1930, and was a Battalion Commander during the Emergency, and served as Force Commander of the United Nations in the Congo. €150 - €200 711. Both in fine condition & very scarce.
